“Walmart Offers New Books For $10
10/16/2009 — A price war has broken out in the book world.
Walmart Stores Inc. announced Thursday that its online site, walmart.com, would charge just $10, with free shipping, for such upcoming hardcover releases as Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue” and John Grisham’s “Ford County,” a cut of 60 percent or more from the regular cost.
Amazon.com, the leading online book seller, has responded, also slashing its price to $10 for “Going Rogue,” ”Ford County,” Michael Crichton’s “Pirate Latitudes” and other leading pre-orders.
“At Walmart.com, we remain committed to providing our customers with the lowest prices available online. That commitment extends to the nation’s best-selling books, especially during an increasingly challenging year for many of our customers,” Raul Vazquez, Walmart.com’s CEO, said in a statement.
“Our newest offering — the Top 10 pre-selling books at just $10, with free home delivery — is a true reflection of this commitment to better help our customers shop and save money online, just in time for the approaching holiday season.”
In a new program called “America’s Reading List,” Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart also will offer 50 percent off or more on 200 current best-sellers, including Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol” and Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help.”
Thursday’s price cuts come at a time when Seattle-based Amazon.com and other sellers have been charging just $9.99 for ebooks, a price that publishers worry is unrealistically low. The reductions also make it increasingly hard for independent sellers, who can’t afford such large discounts, to compete for the most popular books.
Booksellers have fought hard for blockbuster releases such as Brown’s “Lost Symbol” and the “Harry Potter” stories, offering reductions of 50 percent of higher. But Wal-Mart’s announcement suggests a broad, sustained race for customers at prices few can afford to offer.

From Arkansas Business
“Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched an addition to its online business that has outside retailers selling nearly 1 million new items through Walmart.com, a move that could help the world’s largest retailer catch up in the online world.
The Walmart Marketplace has products from categories that include home, baby, toys, apparel, sporting goods and sports memorabilia. The company said it picked the retailers — including eBags, CSN Stores and Pro Team — because they have large product assortments and solid customer service track records.
Retail consultant Burt Flickinger III said Wal-mart can use online sales an area for growth, especially considering how the company’s stores have saturated much of the U.S. market. He said Wal-Mart can also draw online customers from the European continent and South Korea, where it no longer has stores.
“This gives Wal-Mart a chance to close the widening gap with Amazon.com and Apple,” Flickinger said.
Apple has knocked off Wal-Mart as the top music seller, and Amazon has posted healthy sales gains of late, though its second-quarter earnings in July came in below expectations. In its second quarter, Wal-Mart posted its first drop in sales at stores open at least a year, indicating a need to find new growth areas.
“Online is one key growth frontier Wal-mart has yet to conquer,” Flickinger said. Bringing in established companies is faster than the company developing such a massive addition itself, he said.
Flickinger said that with Mike Duke taking over this year as Wal-Mart Stores president and CEO, the company has moved other managers into place to build sales across Wal-Mart’s divisions.
E-Commerce Made Easy by Tiger Team Solutions
“Wal-Mart is fully focused on winning against every key competitor on land and online,” Flickinger said.
On the Web site, payment for products ordered from the partner companies is handled by Walmart.com. The partner retailer will handle shipping and customer service. Wal-Mart says it plans to add more companies.
The names of the different retailers are listed on individual product pages. The Marketplace had centerpiece placement on the Walmart.com site Monday.”
From hispanic Wire
“BENTONVILLE, Ark., July 16 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Walmart today announced plans to develop a worldwide sustainable product index during a meeting with 1,500 of its suppliers, associates and sustainability leaders at its home office. The index will establish a single source of data for evaluating the sustainability of products.
“Customers want products that are more efficient, that last longer and perform better,” said Mike Duke, Walmart’s president and CEO. “And increasingly they want information about the entire lifecycle of a product so they can feel good about buying it. They want to know that the materials in the product are safe, that it was made well and that it was produced in a responsible way.
“We do not see this as a trend that will fade. Higher customer expectations are a permanent part of the future,” Duke continued. “At Walmart, we’re working to make sustainability sustainable, so that it’s a priority in good times and in the tough times. An important part of that is developing the tools to help enable sustainable consumption.”
The company will introduce the initiative in three phases, beginning with a survey of its more than 100,000 suppliers around the world. The survey includes 15 questions that will serve as a tool for Walmart’s suppliers to evaluate their own sustainability efforts. The questions will focus on four areas: energy and climate; material efficiency; natural resources, and people and community. (Editors: for a list of the questions, photos of today’s meeting and a fact sheet go to walmartstores.com/milestone.)
“The survey will include simple but powerful questions covering familiar territory, such as the location of our suppliers’ factories, along with new areas like water use and solid waste,” said John Fleming, chief merchandising officer, Walmart U.S. “The questions aren’t complicated but we’ve never before systematically asked for this kind of information. The survey is a key first step toward establishing real transparency in our supply chain.”
Fleming also said the company will ask its top tier U.S. suppliers to complete the survey by Oct. 1. Outside the United States, the company will develop timelines on a country-by-country basis for suppliers to complete the survey.
As a second step, the company is helping create a consortium of universities that will collaborate with suppliers, retailers, NGOs and government to develop a global database of information on the lifecycle of products — from raw materials to disposal. Walmart has provided the initial funding for the Sustainability Index Consortium, and invited all retailers and suppliers to contribute.
The company will also partner with one or more leading technology companies to create an open platform that will power the index.
“It is not our goal to create or own this index,” said Duke. “We want to spur the development of a common database that will allow the consortium to collect and analyze the knowledge of the global supply chain. We think this shared database will generate opportunities to be more innovative and to improve the sustainability of products and processes.”
The final step in developing the index will be to translate the product information into a simple rating for consumers about the sustainability of products. This will provide customers with the transparency into the quality and history of products that they don’t have today.
